Hepworth United JFC: The “Spirit of Huw Thatcher” award for under 15s

by huw15

The Spirit of Huw Thatcher award will be held for 1 year by the winner who will have his/her name engraved on it.  It will be a returnable trophy but with a minature for the winner to keep for the under 15 age group at Hepworth every year and will be separate to the the Players’ and Coaches’ players of the year awards.  It will be awarded every year to an under 15 player.  The first award was won by George (big) Richardson.

In 10 years time for example, there will be 10 boys of different ages with an award to treasure for life that will remind them of the importance of the spirit of sport.

We hope the permanent minature trophy will remind the winners of a young man and great Hepworth United footballer called Huw Thatcher and everything he stood for – in football and in sport as a part of life.  The award will be made to someone who has shown particular spirit as a participant in under 15s football at Hepworth United.

Huw had a wide range of interests and friends, but Hepworth United and his friends there, were a massive part of his life for nearly ten years.  He was incredibly proud to play for Hepworth and of the success he achieved there.

Little Wembley is a beautiful setting – and is one of a number of special places for Huw (despite it’s churned up muddy surface in the winter.)  Huw loved playing at Little Wembley for Hepworth United and the School – he was also familiar with the equally beautiful setting of Far Lane (with less mud but a lot more wind!)  Hepworth United and these lovely football fields were home from home for Huw and were very happy places where he grew up.

With thanks to everyone at Hepworth United, in particular John Field, Chairman of the Junior Football Club.
