Nelson Nunez receives the second Spirit of Huw Thatcher under 15s football award
Congratulations to Nelson Nunez who was presented with the second Spirit of Huw Thatcher award for Hepworth United under 15s on 10th June 2012.
Following (Big) George Richardson’s receipt of the award in 2011, Nelson Nunez was delighted to receive this award in 2012.
The award is a way to remember Huw and to recognise something special over the years that an under 15 player has contributed to his age group – in the spirit of Huw – recognising spirit, commitment and effort.
Nelson has been with Hepworth United’s Junior section since he was 6 and while he doesn’t always start in what is a very strong squad, he always turns up to training and never complains.
He has played in every position this season (including goalkeeper) and scored the goal of the season from his own half!
He is a good trainer and gives everything on the pitch, and was even back playing this season just 2 weeks after having is apendix removed!
It was a difficult choice for the under 15 coaches to make but Nelson is a deserved winner. I remember Nelson as a 6 year old starting to play football and messing around with Huw at Upperthong Junior school – now he towers over me as you can see in this picture.
It seems impossible that we have now presented this award for the second time, time certainly doesn’t wait for anything or anyone.
Huw had success as a footballer – winning cups with Hepworth, and captaining his school team in a number of district cup finals. But the most important things for him were playing football with his friends and giving everything on the pitch. This is the spirit of Huw and the spirit of this award, and it is fitting that Nelson has won it this year – a player who plays the game in the right spirit – he just enjoys playing with his friends and gives everything to the cause of a great local sports club.
