Huw travelled in our hearts with us as we climbed & descended 10,000 feet across the hills of northern England this weekend ♥

We started at seal level in Whitehaven and finished at sea level in Tynemouth.  In between these Westerly and Easterly points we cycled 144 miles, conquered the Pennine Hills, and climbed and descended around 10,000 feet – that’s the equivalent of going up and down Snowdon (the highest mountain in England and Wales) from sea level, nearly 3 times!

Collection by the Heavy Arts Theatre School at the Lawrence Batley Theatre on 23rd & 24th July

Four of Huw’s friends are involved with the Heavy Arts Theatre School in Huddersfield; Lawrence Güntert, Hayley Diamond, Tara Atkinson and Caroline Hamilton. Their next production is ‘High School Musical On Stage!’ on 23rd and 24th July.  Lawrence Güntert has known Huw since they started school together at Upperthong Junior School 11 years ago.  Lawrence was a close friend of Huw’s for years and they stayed good mates throughout High School.  Lawrence’s talents lie on the stage and with music.   Huw met Hayley, Tara and Caroline 4 years ago at Holmfirth High and he became close to them over the years.  They were all at the 5 a side football competition in June along with other things over the last few months.

A truly great effort as 40 riders complete the cricket ground cycle challenge : 44 miles & £2,000 inspired by a young man who is loved so much

A day when Huw was remembered in a loving, respectful and truly gutsy way resulted in achievements that the cyclists will remember for the rest of their lives.  The event included a lot of laughs, pride, personal victories and of course some aches and pains!  40 cyclists took part in a (hilly) ride over some 44 miles with participants ranging from 10 years old up to those in their 50s!  For some it was the furthest they had ever cycled in one day.  It was a team effort involving a great support team throughout the day and together we raised around £2,000 for Huw’s Trust.  Huw continues to inspire great things 🙂

Pleasure and pain : the leg waxing at school raises an incredible £1,4000

Huw’s friends continue to act with the deepest respect, compassion, care and love for him that you could imagine.  The latest in a long line of things they have done to remember Huw and raise money was the leg waxing event at school on Wednesday 6th July.  The total funds are still being collected but the estimate is £1,400 which exceeded all our expectations.  And they had a lot of fun from the pleasure and pain they all took part in.

They sang & played their hearts out: two superb bands put on a stunning night to remember a stunning 15 year old

We knew it would be quite a night last night at the Picturedrome – but we didn’t know it would be such a night to remember.  It felt like teenage Holmfirth met 70s rock and punk; and they got on great 🙂  Huw was there in spirit including the 4 banners that made a beautiful backdrop to the set.   The stage and set up looked a million dollars – the bands, the lighting and Huw behind and above it all.  The night was a perfect combination of people having a wonderful night, great performances by the 2 bands, and everyone remembering Huw in such a positive way.

Dave Brennan & Nick pedal behind & watch with awe as Huw’s Uncle Steve & cousin Doug powered up Holme Moss to complete cycle marathon

Dave Brennan and Nick pedalled behind and watched with awe as Huw’s Uncle Steve (46 yrs old) and Huw’s cousin Doug Wilson (13 years) left us in their wake as they powered up Holme Moss at 10.00pm on Friday 1st July.  Steve had cycled 179 miles from Cardiff and Doug 102 miles of it earlier in the day as they ripped into that mountain like men possessed to complete their last 9 miles.  Dave (who is a seasoned and very competent cyclist) and Nick, had cycled up the Holmfirth side of the hill at 9.00pm and down the other side to meet them – and they pulled away from us up the Woodhead side.  Inspired by the 3 cars following and their massive achievement – and mostly inspired by Huw Thatcher who they love and will never forget for the rest of their lives.
