Thank you for some lovely ways to remember Huw at the Upperthong Gala
It was the Upperthong Gala this weekend. Huw went to the Gala nearly every weekend over 15 years. From a toddler rushing round playing with his friends and a ball to a 15 year old last year – still running round with his friends and playing cricket or football but a bigger version of the same Huw…………and paying a bit more attention to the girls 🙂 This weekend saw a fund raising cricket competition on Saturday and sales of the Huw T shirts on both days………..
Over £500 raised in Cardiff this week too : with love from Huw’s Granny
While everyone was busy with 5 a side football and the karate tournament last weekend, Huw’s Granny was making final preparations for her tea / coffee afternoon which took place today on 21st June. The weather obliged during the afternoon; she raised over £500 and they all had a good time doing something positive in Huw’s name.
Feedback from the Holme Valley Black Belt Academy inter-club tournment – organised by Jordan Craven
Jordan Craven is a good friend of Huw’s who takes part in the Holme Valley Black Belt Academy. ‘Crov’ as he is known, came up with the idea of an event run with his club to raise funds for Huw’s trust – and to remember Huw. Over the last month or so Crov has set up the event, arranged printing for the tickets, promoted the event and then took part in it himself. The end result – an entertaining event, promotion of the sport, getting a load of good people together, a sense of achievement for all the participants and most of all remembering Huw and raising £500 for Huw’s trust. Well done Crov and here is a bit more about the event.
24 hours 5 a side for Huw : a very special day (and night)
Some days are special and some are very special. All the days involving Huw’s friends are always very special and the 24 hours football tournaments were no exception. There will be other days when friends and family do fantastic things, but this Saturday & Sunday was all about the 24hrs football. The brainchild of Sam Briggs involved 220 players and a similar numbers of visitors / spectators during the 24 hours. It was not lost on Huw’s friends that this was a day he would have revelled in. Alongside that sadness, we saw hundreds of people remembering Huw, loving Huw, having a good time, and raising over £2000 for his charity trust 🙂
Daniel and Simon Bateman: Sheffield Fun Run 8th May 2011
Daniel and Simon Bateman completed the Sheffield Fun Run on Sunday 8th May. Simon is a colleague of Nick’s at work and his son Daniel is a promising 7 year old footballer with AFC Dronfield. They successfully completed the Fun Run and are donating their £90 sponsorship money to the Huw Thatcher Trust.
A fulfilling and moving weekend on Sat 7th and Sun 8th May – raising over £600
There have been a number of incredibly moving and sometimes desperate days over the last 8 weeks. Today was a day that was incredibly fulfilling as well as moving. A group of us raised £531 at the Folk Festival over the weekend of 7th and 8th May, and we want to thank the generosity of the people in Holmfirth. But mostly we want to thank the friends (young and less young) of Huw and the rest of his family for their inventiveness and efforts over the weekend.
Kirkburton Middle School: feedback from their amazing non uniform day 17th May
Kirkburton Middle School held an incredibly successful non-uniform day on Tuesday 17th May in aid of the Trust. Sue Charlesworth set this up – her son Thomas Bull was a good friend of Huw’s and the Charlesworth’s were all fond of Huw. James Charlesworth is a dedicated coach at Hepworth Under 15s and the whole family have been very moved by what happened to Huw. They have reacted with class; James is part of Team Huw, Tom will be involved in some of the charity work and thanks to Sue, the staff and pupils for making the non uniform day possible in Huw’s memory.
“From Cardiff With Love” – 200 mile bike ride in 24 hrs: Steve Thatcher – 1st July 2011
On Friday 1st July 2011, Steve Thatcher will be cycling the 200 miles from the Cardiff City Stadium to “Sands” in Holmfirth – in just one day! Steve is Huw’s uncle. While Steve has done some long distance rides in the past, “From Cardiff With Love” is taking it to a new level. If (when) Steve completes the ride (on the ‘Prancing Horse’ pictured here,) it will be an incredible feat. And Huw’s 13 year old cousin is planning to do a part of the ride with Steve – an amazing effort from Doug aiming to do 100 miles-plus in a day at the age of 13. Doug’s bike is ‘the yellow peril’ 🙂
Selling Cardiff City matchday programmes: Jake Clayton
Unknown to Huw’s family, Jake Clayton contacted Cardiff City in the middle of March asking if they could produce an article about Huw in a matchday programme. An article was included in the next programme and on the Cardiff City web site – with a further follow up item on the Club’s site. The Club and its printers kindly provided Jake with 150 free copies of the programme which he has sold for the Trust – Jake has raised up to £358 from this with a further £60 to come. Everyone who wants a programme will have bought one by now, but we have a few left so if anyone wants to buy a copy just Contact Us.
Nick, Jen and Carys were offered complimentary tickets for the match too. The fixture was Cardiff City vs Derby County on 2nd April which Cardiff won 4-1. It was a moving day, but Nick, Jen and Carys are glad they went and are grateful to Jake for his taking the time and the trouble to do this – and even think of it in the first place.
Since 2nd April, the club have backed The Huw Thatcher Trust and we are hoping they will allows us to do a bucket collection next season.
