The Huw Thatcher Trust : helping the ‘eyes alight’ for brain injured people
Back in March, we were all devasted and shocked about what happened to Huw. Today we are still devastated but are all working together to remember Huw in a positive way. Today, less than 10 weeks after the Trust was set up, Nick and Jenny met with Judith from the national Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) charity to agree how the first £10,000 from Huw’s Trust was going to be used. It’s going to be used to help the ‘eyes alight’ for 35 to 40 brain injured people – in Yorkshire and the North.
Trust fund update, more positive news
So many positive things are happening. Most days there is some news and today has been no different 🙂 Huw’s Trust was given a donation of £1300 today. This was an incredibly kind donation from Upperthong Tigers – who are (or I should say were) the Under 16 team for Upperthong Football Club in 2009-10. This group were together for many years up to 2010, and they stopped at a team when they were 16 last year.
Hannah Dessoy: Every time I think of your gorgeous smile it makes everything suddenly seem happier
Huw. I don’t really know what to say…..(that’s a change!) But I thought I would just remember all of the good time, of which there were countless!!! I just have to think about all the times in English, Art and Drama last year and it puts a smile on my face.
Sean Brennan: I’ll look after your sister like you promised you would for me
‘Bren’ as he is know to his mates stood shoulder to shoulder with Huw as a great friend in the classroom. Bren stood shoulder to shoulder with Huw at the heart of the Hepworth and school football teams. They formed a towering partnership at the heart of the defence on the pitch, and an unbreakable bond of friendship off it. We value the friendship of the Brennan family, like we do with so many other friends that we never want to be without.
Nick: Holidays over Spring Half Term week
Huw had some lovely family holidays over the years. Jenny is going to do some memories of holidays soon, and I’m doing one now because during this half term week, Huw, Carys and me went away for each of the last 5 years. Last year we were in Benalmadena in the South of Spain and my Mum [who was known to Huw as Granny] was with us for some of the time. Here he is with Granny and Carys – towering over them – he was so tall even a year ago.
Huw’s exam results
We don’t normally go on about exam results but in this case we wanted to say something about Huw’s GCSE results from the exams he took at the beginning of March.
The Hepworth 15s awards night : ‘big’ George Richardson is presented with the “Spirit of Huw Thatcher” award
The Hepworth 15 year olds’ presentation night took place on Sunday 22nd May at Bengal Spice in Holmfirth. The night was organised by James Charlesworth with around 26 players present from both squads. It was a special night which culminated in George being presented with the “Spirit of Huw Thatcher” award.
Huddersfield Town vs Bournemouth 30th September 2006
Congratulations to Town on beating Bournemouth the other night; a great day for the club. So it seems like a good time to look back to 30th September 2006 when Huw was at the Town vs Bournemouth match which ended in a 2-2 draw. Huw was 10 years old and in his last year at Upperthong Junior School. Town, being a great community club, had provided cut price tickets to the junior schools for this match. Huw and I used to go 4 or 5 times a season – usually with Nige and Will Bowers, Russ and Sam Briggs, Al and Joel Birkhead. We loved the football but Huw’s highlights of the trip also included the obligatory hot dog and lots of messing about on the 20 minute walk to the stadium.
