Hoping that Huw is somewhere where he knows about everything: fundraising events, GCSE results day & Cardiff City in the Premier League
As Cardiff City were making their mark on the sporting world last Sunday, the Sky Sports commentators talked of the energy and spirit of the crowd – and how it was inspiring the performance of the players. In the week that the Bluebirds were achieving things beyond anything Huw and I had imagined, Huw’s own energy and spirit was inspiring others – with Carys excelling in her GCSE results and a group of friends completing a 3 day canoeing and running event between Manchester and Huddersfield. Every moment spent this spring and summer has been worth it as the total moves past £84,000
It’s been a few weeks since I last did an update here – May, June and July consisted of ticket selling for the gig, organising the Huw football tournament with Huw’s friends, trying to keep fit for things like the Huw cricket club bike ride, and the small matter of taking part in these things. As I think back on the spring and early summer, after a few weeks’ holiday, I realise how much time was spent on things to do with the Huw Trust. And as I have reflected, I have also realised it was worth every second.
Part 2 – the Bananas eventually slip up in the penalty shoot out as the Huw Thatcher Trust hits £80,000
Read about the thrilling climax to the recent Huw 5 a side tournament here in Part 2 of my report – as Sam Briggs’ team ) the Bluebirds, won a thrilling final late at night on Saturday 20th July.
If you missed it, Part 1 about the early part of the day is here.
The Huw five side day on 20th July – as 130 players show style and class
I can’t say enough about what a wonderful day we had on Saturday 20th July – but I’ll give it a try! Here’s Part 1 of my report of the day – Part 2 will follow in a few days as I try to do justice to day when 130 people played football – and at least that many also turned up to support the event and the players.
The 3rd and final Picturedrome gig was lit up by two of Holmfirth’s best – Huw and Richard
For the 3rd and final year, 500 of us had another great night at the Picturedrome last weekend as the Huw Thatcher Trust raised funds for another local family who need support right now. Read more
A superb if challenging day. Huw was not forgotten today – Huw is not forgotten any day ♥♥♥
A great success today as 40 of us of all ages rode 45 miles, and climbed a total of 5512 feet in temperatures approaching 30 degrees. A great effort by all the riders and the support crew.
Ben Earshaw presented with the Spirit of Huw Thatcher Award
I had the pleasure of presenting the Spirit of Huw Thatcher Award for the 2013 under 15s Hepworth United team tonight – the award was given to Ben Earnshaw and well deserved.
A busy few weeks: schools visited, funds raised and most importantly, Huw remembered
I write this update listening to a radio debate about the British Lions side that will take the field against Australia on 22nd June. I imagine the discussion with Huw about the 15 Welsh players in the squad and his happy recollections of meeting the Welsh rugby squad in 2010. It was the one sport I knew as much about as Huw – when it came to anything else he knew more of the players, clubs and results. Here is a page from a Wales match programme Huw had signed by the players in 2010.
Another tribute our beautiful young guy who was loved by everybody and will be forgotten by nobody ♥♥♥
Every time I start to write one of these updates I think what on earth am I going to say this month? Every time I finish it I think wow, there was so much to say this month! May is just the same and I’ll start with a quick catch up on fund raising activities because the amount of money we have raised has now reached nearly £75,000!
The opening of Chalkdown House – the most important things can in some way last forever
Today I was at the opening of a new hospital for brain injured people at Swindon, which has benefited from funds from the Huw Thatcher Trust – for the IT suite, physiotherapy equipment, kitchen equipment and the garden. It was opened by Princess Anne, with Gabby Logan also there and I was fortunate enough to be introduced to them both. As I was talking to them about Huw and the Trust, I looked up at Huw’s beautiful eyes shining down from his picture in the ‘Huw Thatcher IT Suite’ and I thought ‘forever mate………………….the most important things can in some way, last forever’.
